The initial GOP claim in a Congressional Inquiry is that Bush White House emails were missing and couldn’t be produced. It developed in the investigation that the amount of missing emails was 22 million.
The Bush/Cheney Company set out to be a very secretive administration and handed the job of secrecy and attack to the master of misdirection and falsehood strategy, Karl Rove. Near the start of the George W. Bush administration, the Republican National Committee gave the White House at least 50 personal laptop computers with accounts directly connected to RNC computers. At first discovery of the Bush administration email scandal the Corporate Media didn’t seem to notice or care about the potential malfeasance of violating the Hatch Act and White House Archival laws.
THE HATCH ACT OF 1939: This Act was amended when Newt Gingrich introduced the RNC’s ‘Contract on America ’ in 1993. The new majority GOP Congress also amended the Hatch Act to be more to their liking. However, the GOP let some of the old provisions slip by for Federal Employees.
- May not engage in political activity in any government office
- May not engage in political activity while on duty
- May not engage in political activity while using a government vehicle- (Rove must of laughed hard as he broke each prohibited activity- “Prove it” he must have thought. Or “It was an accident losing those millions of emails”)
Congressman Waxman, Chairman of the House Government and Oversight Committee said the new e-mail communications provided further evidence that White House employees were trying to circumvent the archives system.
In the Hearing, many of the emails were regarding appointment positions for crony Republican’s only. Susan Ralston, Karl Rove’s executive assistant, invited two lobbyists working for Jack Abramoff to use her RNC email account to avoid “security issues” with the White House email system, writes: “I now have an RNC blackberry which you can use to e-mail me at any time. No security issues like my WH email.”
Karl Rove was supposed to appear before Senator Leahy’s Committee, but King of Contempt of Congress Rove managed to postpone his appearance for three weeks.
Then a lawyer for the RNC told congressional staff members that the RNC is missing at least 4 years’ worth of emails from White House senior advisor Karl Rove as part of investigations into the Bush administration. Rove confessed to saying the emails were lost. This was in April 2007, at the time of the ‘outing’ of Valerie Plame and investigating the unethical firing of 8 federal attorneys for politically ideological reasons.
How did Bush/Cheney and Company assure protective secrecy regarding the Congressional Hearings? Remember Admiral John Poindexter of Iran-Contra fame? The Admiral had 5 felony convictions for lying to Congress, the convictions being overturned by a Republican Judge. Poindexter was a perfect fit to testify as the Director of the Information Assurance Office, an agency that includes “Truth Maintenance.” There was plenty of double talk from Poindexter, but he maintained his “Truth Maintenance.”
The Benghazi Boys attack dogs may even know in 2010 and updated in 2011, as posted in an AP article: “A private group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington and the National Security Archive, announced computer technicians had found the 22 million missing White House e-mails and they were settling the lawsuits they filed against the Executive Office of the President in 2007.”
As the AP article suggests: “It will be years before the public sees any of the recovered e-mails because they will now go through the National Archives’ to process for releasing presidential and agency records. Presidential records of the Bush administration won’t be available until 2014 at the earliest.” Well, 2014 has passed and you know it’s very unlikely we’ll learn before November of 2015.
Former Secretary Hillary Clinton should be investigated for her bonehead use of private emails, and hopefully work through the scandal, recognizing what she must do to keep archives honest. However, we can’t let the Republican hypocrites forget their own dastardly, illegal and damaging email scandal of the George W Bush presidency.
